Why do people like wimpy piano playing?

There is a certain piano player who is apparently well known and he does concerts, but all I ever heard of his playing is absurdly simple, so why do people say he is a great pianist? A lot of 12-yr.-olds can play better. I don't get it, and I do know music. Are people just simple-minded, or what?
