How to save data within a runnable JAR file?

I have been using eclipse to create a gui database, I then exported the gui into a runnable JAR file. The JAR file itself runs fine and when I first add data to it, it creates an external .dat file to store the information. I was wondering if it is possible to store data within the runnable JAR itself or can it only be stored via an external .dat file?
