My Canon EOS Rebel XT wont stop taking apertures?

after awhile i found out how to take apertures when it was night time back at my shanghai trip. but now i try to take a photo and it takes forever to shutter and it wont stop doing apertures and it does this when its not dark either. how do i take normal photos now that it wont stop taking FOOOOOOREVER to shutter?
