How do you fasten a garter belt to the hose??? Help!?

Okay, so I went and bought my first garter belt and stockings. I was all excited to go home and try them on so I could be prepared for V-day, and guess what!!! I cannot figure out how the hell I am supposed to snap the damn things on! Then when I finally thought I did good, I realized that the y red line that is supposed to run up the back of your leg, was all crooked! HELP! I need a professional here! They are from Fredricks of Hollywood... =....((
