Directions from Fargo ND to Denver Indiana and how to avoid chicago?

i have never drove through chicago before or for that matter any place bigger then Fargo this is my first time. Going through chicago is the short way but i found a different route up to omaha nebraska then straight east into indiana. Does anyone think that the nebraska route would be better then the chicago route for a someone with no experience driving around chicago. Please help me out. thanks
